How are Breast Augmentations Performed?

Your surgeon will begin your breast augmentation by making one of the following incisions, and this will depend on the size and shape of your breasts:

• Trans-axillary approach is when the surgeon makes the incision in the armpit
• Infra-mammary approach will be when the surgeon makes an incision in the crease below the breasts
• Peri-areolar approach is when the surgeon makes an incision where the dark-skin of the areola meets the natural skin

Once the incision has been made, the surgery will continue with the skin being pulled away from the muscle and tissue to allow the insertion of the silicone implant which will then be filled with a saline solution until the ideal size is reached. The implant will be centered below the nipple to achieve the natural appearance of the breast. After 1 to 3 hours, the incision is closed with sutures and the area is bandaged.

What to Expect After Your Breast Augmentation?

The bruising and swelling that commonly appears after breast augmentations, specifically around the nipples, will subside over a 3 to 5 week period. A surgical bra is usually required to hold the breasts while they heal, and Drs. Rosenberg and Lambrushi often prescribe antibiotics or pain medication for possible infections and pain. Normal activity may resume around the 2-week period; however, the breasts should not be stimulated and strenuous activity should not take place for 4 weeks.
