While the ears are developing, there can be abnormalities in the development of cartilage. This can result in ear protrusions, which causes both adults and children embarrassment. Ear surgery can correct protruding ears or create a more balanced shape and size of ear for the patient. This procedure can be performed as soon as the ears are fully developed, which usually happens around the age of 4. How is Ear Surgery Performed?

There is minimal scarring from this procedure because the initial incision is made in the natural folds of skin where the head and ear meet, behind the ear. Your surgeon will then trim excess skin and cartilage to pull the ear back, and then if the patient wishes, the cartilage can be sculpted to create more aesthetic shape. Upon completion, Dr. Rosenberg or Dr. Lambrushi will pin back the ear with permanent sutures and temporary ones are occasionally used to hold the ear during the healing process. What to Expect After Your Otoplasty?

After ear surgery, heavy dressings are usually placed over the ears to hold them in place and aid in healing. Once the ears have begun to heal, a lighter dressing will be used for about 2 weeks, depending on the patient. Normal activity can resume after a week, but for a few weeks West Dundee patients should avoid anything that could bend the ears.
