While the ears are developing, there can be abnormalities in the development of cartilage. This can result in asymmetry or ear protrusion. Otoplasty can be performed to correct this problem, creating a more balanced shape and size of the ear for the patient. This procedure can be performed as soon as the ears are fully developed, usually after the age of four. Recovery is minimal, however any physical activities which may lead to injury to the ears is prohibited for about eight weeks.
